Insights

A few days ago I was talking to a CEO of an international company who sells nutraceutical products. He was telling me how the sector has changed over the years since they started 20 years ago. He was telling me that at the very beginning they could sell pretty much anything, any plant based powder was good enough.
Some years later their customers became increasingly more educated. They started asking them for extracts instead of powder, extraction by ratio at first and then moving to standardized products based on a particular active matter.

The next big wave that took many companies by surprise was quality. At first being certified by ISO or GMP standards was rare but some years later became a requirement. He told me that very few customers will have bought from them if they had not been certified by ISO and GMP. He explained to me that the next big hurdle for them was that most of their products slowly became commodities which meant their only point of differentiation was price. Not a good place to be.
To get out of that they had to create branded ingredients, from scratch. This meant investing years in R&D and then put them to the test with clinical trials. This highly increased the time and cost required to bring products to market. And that didn’t guarantee anyone to be successful selling them. He shared with me that companies that didn’t have the resources to create branded ingredients started to disappear or were absorbed.

So far this industry has been focused on product. He explained to me that what is happening now has nothing to do with what they have seen so far. The focus has shifted from product to the customer and customers are asking for products that work. They need to have evidence that products are working for them. Before it was an act of faith to buy and take nutraceuticals, from now on only products that can prove their efficacy will be sold.
Individuals want to assume greater control over their own health. Mobile changes everything. There is a revolution in wearables, devices and even insideables (micro devices that go inside your body). There are devices that measure heart rate, skin color changes, blood pressure, oximetry, stress levels, lungs capacity, glucose levels, hydration levels, VO2 max, antioxidants in your skin or devices that perform blood and urine analysis; and this revolution in devices has just started.

Now is the Big Data realm and once again companies that don’t adapt to this digital era will be swept away. He confessed to me that this will allow them to develop products faster and with fewer costs. Products can now be simpler, what matters is not the product but the results and value they deliver to customers.
So far we have been enjoying the digital revolution on a personal level, now it’s time to embrace it in our industry. It’s quite exciting not just as a company but also as a user.
There will be a time when we look back and say “I cannot believe in the past people were taking pills without knowing what they were doing to them”.
